Showtime Cancels Penny Dreadful: City of Angels After One Season

Earlier this year, creator John Logan returned to the world of Penny Dreadful. But while his original series took place in Victorian England, his follow-up moved the setting to 1938 Los Angeles. Unfortunately, the new show’s top-notch cast and timely premise weren’t enough to secure a second season. Variety is reporting that Showtime has cancelled Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.

The network has also issued a statement about the series’ cancellation, which you can read below:

“Showtime has decided not to move forward with another season of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. We would like to thank executive producers John Logan, Michael Aguilar and the entire cast and crew for their outstanding work on this project.”

City of Angels premiered on Showtime back in April and concluded its first season in June. The series starred Daniel Zovatto as Tiago Vega, the first Mexican-American LAPD detective. Following a string of murders, Vega joins his new partner, Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane), to track down the killer. Natalie Dormer also headlined the series as Magda, a shapeshifting demoness who manipulates events and emotions around the city as the detectives continue their investigation.

The show drew influence from Mexican folklore and commented on various forms of bigotry and political intrigue throughout its run. Over the course of its 10 episodes, City of Angels earned mostly decent reviews from critics. However, some viewers compared the series unfavorably to its predecessor, which aired three seasons from 2014 to 2016.
