Dark Horse Comics has announced a new three-issue limited series that serves as a prequel to the upcoming video game John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando.
As revealed exclusively by Bloody Disgusting, John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando: Rise of the Sludge God is due to hit comic shops in March 2024. The series hails from writer Michael Moreci, artist Alberto J. Alburquerque, colorist Jason Wordie, and letterer Nate Piekos.

What is Rise of the Sludge God about?
A synopsis for Rise of the Sludge God reads as follows: “A normal day for Obsidian CEO Leon Dorsey becomes horrific when his search for clean energy accidentally awakens an ancient, sludgey evil. Humanity’s last hope against a toxic future rests with a private group of commandos.”
“There are few things as exciting as building a new world and we’re delighted to be able to do that again with John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando,” said Saber Interactive executive Tim Willits. “We’re thrilled to have had the opportunity to partner with Dark Horse to expand on this universe and give people a small taste of what’s to come.”
John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando launches in 2024
John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando itself is due to launch sometime in 2024, though currently lacks a specific release date. Developed by Focus Entertainment and published by Saber, the game will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
In the co-operative first-person shooter, players are tasked with battling the Sludge God — an “eldritch abomination” with the ability to turn people into zombies. “In the near future, an experimental attempt to harness the power of the Earth’s core ends in a terrifying disaster: the release of the Sludge God,” the game’s official synopsis reads. “…However, the genius behind the experiment has a plan to make things right. All he needs is a team of competent, highly-trained mercenaries to get the job done. Unfortunately, those are all too expensive. Which is why he’s hired … The Toxic Commandos!”
