James Gunn’s DC movie confirmed to include Superman’s pet dog, Krypto

James Gunn’s Superman will include Krypto, Superman’s superdog. This Superman movie update comes from comic writer Mark Waid, who revealed this during an episode of the Capes and Lunatics Podcast while talking about Gunn’s approach to the DCU.

He said, “I like Gunn’s reverential approach by and large to this kind of stuff, and you know reverential without taking it too seriously. I mean, the movie has a dog in it, a superpowered dog with heat vision.” (via Collider)

Waid is known for his work on titles like Kingdom Come and Batman/Superman: World’s Finest. Filming wrapped in July 2024, and the movie is set for release on July 11, 2025. It will introduce Krypto, Superman’s super-powered pet dog with abilities like flight and heat vision, as part of the Superman story.

The film, directed and written by Gunn, is the first movie in the new DC Universe and reboots the Superman film series. It stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The story focuses on Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his upbringing in Smallville, Kansas.

Other cast members include Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The film features Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, expanding the roster of DC superheroes. Additionally, Wendell Pierce plays Perry White, the editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet, in the movie. Skyler Gisondo portrays Jimmy Olsen, and María Gabriela de Faría appears as Angela Spica/The Engineer.

The film draws inspiration from notable Superman comics, including All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely. Superman will be the first film in the new DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. It introduces a mix of established and new characters.
