Superman: James Gunn Hints at DCU Movie’s Runtime

James Gunn has commented on the runtime for Superman.

Superman will be released in United States theaters in July 2025. The first feature film set within Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU, Superman stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel.

With the first official trailer for Superman having now been released, Gunn has commented on the upcoming film’s runtime. While he didn’t give an exact number, he said at a press event this week, via ComicBook, that the movie is “well under three hours…under two and a half.”

What are the runtimes of previous Superman movies?

The original 1978 Superman movie, in comparison, had a runtime of 2 hours and 23 minutes. That’s the exact same runtime that Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, which was released in 2012, had as well. Superman II, meanwhile, had a runtime of 2 hours and 7 minutes (the Richard Donner cut was 1 hour and 55 minutes), while Superman III came in at 2 hours and 5 minutes and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace was 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Superman Returns, released in 2006, is currently the longest solo Superman movie to date, as that had a runtime of 2 hours and 34 minutes. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trails closely behind with a runtime of 2 hours and 31 minutes (the Ultimate Edition is 31 minutes longer).

Along with Corenswet, Superman stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, Neva Howell as Martha Kent, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.

Superman will be released in United States theaters on July 11, 2025.
