Jason Reitman Says He Will Hand Ghostbusters 'Back to the Fans'

Jason Reitman, son of Ivan Reitman, and director of the upcoming Ghostbusters threequel, stopped by Bill Burr’s Monday Morning Podcast and dropped this golden nugget about the anticipated film:

“We are in every way trying to go back to original technique and hand the movie back to the fans.”

Reitman also pointed out the “painstaking research'” his production team took to make that awesome teaser feel more like the original film — even down to the titles. The director added that he’s “not making the Juno of Ghostbusters movies,” a quote that some took as slightly sexist; or, at the very least, a jab at the 2016 Paul Feig film.

Reitman made it clear that was unintentional via Twitter, saying: “Wo, that came out wrong! I have nothing but admiration for Paul and Leslie and Kate and Melissa and Kristen and the bravery with which they made Ghostbusters 2016. They expanded the universe and made an amazing movie!”

Reitman will be co-writing the new Ghostbusters movie with Gil Kenan (Monster HousePoltergeist), taking up the mantle from his father Ivan Reitman who directed the original Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters 2 (1989). The younger Reitman also had a memorable cameo in the second film.

While it is currently unknown who of the surviving core Ghostbusters cast (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts, Rick Moranis) will return, it has been reported that Reitman is looking to cast four teen actors (two boys and two girls) in lead roles to tackle supernatural baddies.

The new Ghostbusters will drop in theaters on July 10, 2020.
