Former Maria Rambeau Actress DeWanda Wise Talks Dream MCU Role

Years after losing the Maria Rambeau part in 2019’s Captain Marvel, DeWanda Wise says she has her sights set on playing X-Men‘s Storm in a future MCU reboot.

“[Storm] is the only Marvel character I’m interested in,” Wise said to The Movie Dweeb. “It’s the only Marvel character I’ve ever been interested in. … I think we’re going to single-handedly make that happen, and I thank you for that.”

Earning recognition for her work on the Spike Lee series She’s Gotta Have It on Netflix, Wise was originally cast as Carol Danvers’ Air Force companion Maria Rambeau during pre-production on Captain Marvel in 2018. Reported scheduling conflicts with the Netflix series led to Wise’s exit from the MCU installment and was replaced by Lashana Lynch. When Wise was promoting Jurassic World: Dominion in 2022, she detailed her MCU exit to Gizmodo.

“I did not choose to leave,” Wise said. “Like, I would never make that choice for myself, that sounds ridiculous. You sign a contract for a TV show and it’s in first position, and that’s just a responsible… you have audience members who are like, ‘I would’ve taken a lawsuit.’ Good for you. I don’t wanna be sued! Not trying to be sued by Spike Lee and Netflix. So, you know, at the time, it was very disappointing and also difficult in that context.”

When will Storm enter the MCU?

On the big screen, Ororo Munroe/Storm has been played by Oscar-winner Halle Berry in four of Fox’s X-Men movies. Additionally, the young version of the character was played by Alexandra Shipp in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse and 2019’s Dark Phoenix. Though Black Panther: Wakanda Forever producer Nate Moore teased a future Storm appearance in Wakanda, it remains unknown when Marvel Studios plans to bring the character into the MCU.

On the small screen, however, the animated version of Storm will be back in X-Men ’97, the continuation of the classic ’90s X-Men: The Animated Series that aired on Saturday mornings on Fox Kids. X-Men ’97 begins streaming on Disney+ on March 20.
