The Fantastic Four: Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Thing Will Be Motion Capture Instead of a Suit

Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s The Thing will be brought to life through motion capture instead of practical effects in Marvel’s The Fantastic Four.

Speaking with Jimmy Kimmel in a clip shared on Twitter by Fantastic Four Updates, Moss-Bachrach was asked if he’d be wearing a suit in the upcoming MCU movie being directed by Matt Shakman.

“I don’t think it’s a suit,” he answered. “I think in the past they’ve done a suit. Michael Chiklis wore a suit. Apparently, the suit was really uncomfortable. It’s kind of — we’re past that, I think. That’s a little kind of cosplay. That’s a little amateur, that stuff, now, with the technology that we have. I think it’s mostly performance capture, motion capture.”

When asked if The Fantastic Four would be set in the 1960s (given the photo that Marvel shared when the cast was officially announced seems to hint the movie will take place in the past), Moss-Bachrach cryptically said, “That image does seem to be 60s themed.”

Who else stars in Marvel’s The Fantastic Four?

On February 14, 2024, Marvel Studios officially announced the main cast of The Fantastic Four.

Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, The Mandalorian) will play Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic in the forthcoming superhero movie. He’ll be joined by Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, and Moss-Bachrach as The Thing/Ben Grimm.

The role of Doctor Doom has not yet been cast; although, according to a recent report from Jeff Sneider, Doom won’t be seen until near the end of the movie. Instead, Galactus is rumored to be the main villain of The Fantastic Four, with Javier Bardem reportedly being the current top choice for the role. Marvel has not yet officially commented on the matter.

The Fantastic Four releases in United States theaters on July 25, 2025, from Marvel Studios.
