Andrew Garfield, one of three actors who played Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s Spider-Man: No Way Home, shared some of his memories about the unusual experience of working on the movie with co-stars Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire.
As reported by Variety, Garfield spoke at the Red Sea Film Festival on Thursday, where he talked about his enduring love for his character even before he starred in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man. When he reprised the role in No Way Home, he said, “I think until all three of us were in the room rehearsing, figuring out what we were going to do, there was no way of writing it. Every single one of us had our own version of that character and we didn’t know how they were going to interact, until they were actually interacting in the room together.”
Three Spider-Men in one MCU movie
Spider-Man: No Way Home was the third film in the trilogy starring Holland, the latest actor to play the young superhero in live action. In the movie, dimensional barriers begin to break down, allowing Holland’s Peter to come face to face with Garfield, and with Maguire, who starred in his own Spider-Man trilogy before either of the others. The unorthodox story created a unique filming experience for Garfield, who said, “So it was as if you were making a low-budget short film with friends. And it was the biggest movie in the history of movies.”
Spider-Man: No Way Home, which brought back a number of villains from earlier Spider-Man movies in addition to their stars, was a major hit which made $1.922 billion at the global box office off of a budget of $200 million.
Another Spider-Man movie is currently in early stages of development. In the meantime, The Amazing Spider-Man and its 2014 sequel, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, are both available to stream on Disney+.
