Kevin Feige Addresses Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr.’s Rumored MCU Returns

Kevin Feige has addressed reports saying Marvel is looking to bring Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jr. back for a new Avengers project.

On November 1, 2023, Variety published an article saying Marvel was considering bringing back the original Avengers for a new MCU ensemble film. The article states this would include Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, both of whom died in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Feige said, “Fallen Avengers returning, is that new? I have literally not even seen that, is that a new rumor?”

When asked specifically about Johansson and Downey Jr., Feige continued, “We did not discuss that at the retreat, is the truth. We’re doing a project with Scarlett. I love Robert, who is part of the family. In terms of returning, we’ll have to see.”

At this time, Marvel Studios has not officially confirmed that an Avengers movie with the original cast — Downey Jr., Johansson, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Chris Evans’ Captain America, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, and Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye — is in the works. There is also the possibility that the aforementioned cast returns for one or both of the upcoming Avengers movies, 2026’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars, though this has not been confirmed by Marvel Studios at this time.

What’s next for Marvel Studios?

Next up for Marvel Studios is The Marvels, which opens in the United States on November 10, 2023. Following that, What If…? will debut its second season prior to the end of 2024 while all five episodes of Echo will drop on Disney+ on January 10, 2024. The first season of the animated X-Men ’97 series is also expected to hit Disney+ in early 2024.

Deadpool 3 was originally scheduled to hit theaters on May 3, 2024, but the movie is no longer expected to hit that release date because of the ongoing Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike. Captain America: Brave New World, meanwhile, currently has a July 26, 2024, release date.
