Margot Robbie Wouldn’t Have Done The Suicide Squad Without James Gunn

Throughout his career, James Gunn has easily established himself as a unique voice in the film industry. And not only is that voice once again on full display in The Suicide Squad, it also played a significant role in convincing some of the movie’s stars to sign on in the first place, including longtime DCEU powerhouse Margot Robbie.

Robbie shared her appreciation for Gunn while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at The Suicide Squad’s premiere earlier this week. She even claimed that if anyone else was directing the movie, she might have thought twice about coming aboard.

“If I read the script and didn’t know James Gunn was going to direct it, it would have been a straight-up ‘no,’” said Robbie. “I was like, ‘No one could pull this off.’ It’s so specific in its brand of comedy and violence. But it came out of his imagination. He knew exactly what to do with it.”

Early reactions to the film definitely indicate that Robbie was right to trust her instincts. Moreover, the film’s glowing critical reception already has fans wondering about the possibility of a sequel. And according to DC Films president Walter Hamada, the door is always open for Gunn to return.

“Gunn is always welcome back, whatever he wants to do,” said Hamada. “He really has a vision and he’s a great partner with us. Whenever he wants to come back, we’re ready for him. He’ll be back. We have more stuff planned.”

The Suicide Squad hits theaters and HBO Max this Friday, August 6.
