Angel Manuel Soto To Direct a New Transformers Movie For Paramount

The success of Charm City Kings on HBO Max last fall signaled a bright future for Angel Manuel Soto’s directing career. Last month, he was chosen to helm DC’s long-gestating Blue Beetle standalone film. But it looks like he’ll be spending time with robots in disguise as well. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Paramount has enlisted Soto to direct a new Transformers movie.

Story details are being kept under wraps. But according to the report, Soto’s film will be separate from Paramount’s primary Transformers franchise, which includes the Michael Bay series and Travis Knight’s Bumblebee spinoff. The script comes from Marco Ramirez, who previously served as co-showrunner of both Daredevil season 2 and The Defenders. Ramirez has also written for Sons of Anarchy and Fear the Walking Dead. Most recently, he was a writer and executive producer on CBS All Access’ reboot of The Twilight Zone.

After weathering critical backlash from all five of Bay’s films, Paramount breathed new life into the Transformers series when they released Bumblebee in 2018. Most viewers agreed that it was a vast improvement over its predecessors. Since then, the studio has been plotting even more big-screen adventures with giant robots. Stephen Caple Jr. (Creed II) is currently working on another Transformers film from a script by Joby Harold. Additionally, Toy Story 4 helmer Josh Cooley is developing his own animated prequel.

Before Charm City Kings wowed audiences at Sundance last year, most of Soto’s past work consisted of short films. He has also dabbled in VR storytelling with projects like Dinner Party and Bashir’s Dream.
