Fans will find the answer to the “what if Zack Snyder stayed on the Justice League set in 2017″ question in a few months. At the time, the director was appointed to helm the Warner Bros.’ blockbuster. He then had to quit the set following his daughter’s sudden death. But it wasn’t just her loss that made him leave. While talking with Cinemablend‘s Sean O’Connell for the latter’s upcoming Release the Snyder Cut book, Snyder revealed that the tragedy drained off all the energy he had, and he chose not to fight for his version of Justice League at the time. Feeling burned by the Batman v Superman reception, the studio executives had lost some of their confidence in his vision. And Snyder lost his desire to push back.
“I was in this place of [knowing] my family needs me more than this bullshit, and I just need to honor them and do the best I can to heal that world,” he said. “I had no energy to fight [the studio], and fight for [the movie]. Literally, zero energy for that. I really think that’s the main thing. I think there’s a different world where I stayed and kind of tried. And I’m sure I could have . . . because every movie is a fight, right? I was used to that. But I just did not have the [energy]. There was no fight in me. I had been beaten by what was going on in my life and I just didn’t want to, I didn’t care to . . . that was kind of where I was.”

Things worked out well for Snyder, ultimately. The director and Warner Bros. reached a deal to release the director’s cut, and Snyder will get the chance to share his version of the film soon. In the latest months, actors Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, and Ray Fisher reprised their roles as Batman, Wonder Woman, and Cyborg, respectively, to film new scenes. Zack Snyder’s Justice League was initially announced to premiere as a four-hour miniseries on HBO Max somewhere in 2021. Snyder has also indicated there’ll be a complete movie version, though that may be for Blu-ray. Many hints point to a debut in March. Warner Bros. has yet to announce an official release date for the film.
