Next year, Jared Leto will reprise his role as the Joker in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, making it the first time he’s played the character since Suicide Squad hit theaters in 2016. Leto, who has repeatedly expressed his desire to play the villain again, was probably thrilled to get Snyder’s call. However, his Suicide Squad performance certainly polarized moviegoers, especially when it came to his physical appearance. But according to Snyder, he’ll be making some tweaks to Leto’s look.
Earlier today, Snyder spoke with Beyond the Trailer (via Heroic Hollywood) about his Justice League cut. When Leto’s role came up, he teased his plans for the Clown Prince of Crime.
“I wanted to of course honor what had been created with him because I thought it was really cool,” said Snyder. “But also in this, I’m not going to tell you what happens in the little scene, but some water has gone under the proverbial bridge between when last we saw Joker and this appearance. So he’s made some…he’s a road-weary Joker, I guess that’s a way of saying it.”

Snyder also explained how he approached Leto about coming back to the DC Universe.
“I will say that he was really gracious with his entertaining my idea,” related Snyder. “And I told him it was a thing that I had felt like even when I was working on Justice League in London, I felt like it was an inevitable course that the movie had to take. So when I told him it was a thing that I’d been kicking around in my head for quite a while, I feel like he just kinda warmed up to the idea that was kind of an inevitable thing that kind of has to happen. I am grateful and I am forever in debt to his kindness for doing it.”
Leto’s Joker in Suicide Squad was routinely criticized for his tattoos and silver teeth, which many fans thought were excessive. Even Ayer himself later conceded that the “Damaged” tattoo on his forehead was “one step too far.” But whatever Snyder has in mind for the villain, we now know that it won’t take up a lot of screentime. During the same interview, Snyder also revealed that only around four minutes of new Justice League footage have been shot.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League will hit HBO Max in 2021.
