Snake Eyes Movie Spinoff Adds The Raid’s Iko Uwais

Audiences will soon get to learn more about Snake Eyes’ origin when Paramount’s upcoming G.I. Joe spinoff lands in theaters.  Via The Hollywood Reporter, Iko Uwais has been recruited to play Snake Eyes’ mentor, the Hard Master.

In the G.I. Joe comics, the Hard Master led the Arashikage Clan of ninjas. He welcomed Snake Eyes into the clan on the recommendation of his nephew, Tommy, who served with Snake Eyes in the Vietnam War. While serving the Hard Master, Snake Eyes continued to surpass Tommy as a ninja; which resulted in a bitter rivalry between them. The Hard Master’s eventual assassination was blamed on Storm Shadow, and he fled in disgrace. Years later, Snake Eyes joined G.I. Joe, while Tommy became Storm Shadow and joined Cobra in part to learn who really killed the Hard Master.

Uwais is best known for his lead role in The Raid: Redemption and its 2014 sequel. He currently headlines the Netflix series Wu Assassins as Kai Jin. Uwais also had a minor role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as Razoo Quin-Fee, the leader of the Kanjiklub. Gerald Okamura previously played the Hard Master in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra in 2009

While the Hard Master is normally depicted as an old man, it’s worth noting that Uwais is only 36. However, it’s possible that the filmmakers are going a different route with the character this time around. Perhaps the film will show Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow training as children before the Hard Master’s tragic demise.

Henry Golding is in talks to play Snake Eyes, while Andrew Koji has been cast as Storm Shadow. Snake Eyes will hit theaters on October 16, 2020.
