Behold Joel and Ellie. As they behold something quite different; a symptom of the world falling apart. As revealed today by head writer Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) on social media, this is the first image from HBO’s upcoming The Last of Us TV series. Pedro Pascal, who has plenty of experience escorting a child through a dangerous future world, plays Joel. And Bella Ramsey is Ellie, a 14 year-old who may be crucial to developing a vaccine for the deadly fungus turning humans into rampaging “Clickers.”

Assuming the show is game-accurate, which seems to be Mazin’s intent as much as possible, this image would take place a good 20 years after the initial apocalypse. So that plane crash is far from fresh.

The cast also includes Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Nico Parker as Sarah, Anna Torv as Tess, and Merle Dandridge reprising her role from the games as Marlene, leader of the anti-quarantine zone militia known as the Fireflies. Mazin co-developed and cowrote the series with game director Neil Druckmann, who has said some scenes will hew closely to the game. Others, however, will emphasize character drama over action, at the request of HBO.
HBO has yet to set a final release date, but the 10-episode series should bow early in 2022.
