Noah Hawley’s Alien TV Series Targets a 2023 Premiere on FX

For the first time in the 40-year history of the franchise, the Alien universe is making the jump to TV with Fargo and Legion creator Noah Hawley at the helm. There have only been a few vague updates about the upcoming FX series since it was announced last winter. But during a TCA presentation held earlier today, network boss John Landgraf offered yet another progress report on the Xenomorphs’ small-screen debut.

Landgraf (via Collider) acknowledged that the series is a massive undertaking, especially given the Alien film’s rabid fanbase. Regardless, he has confidence in Hawley’s abilities as a showrunner. And if everything works out, the show could premiere in two years.

“It’s a really big world-building exercise,” said Landgraf. “Noah, with support from [original Alien director Ridley Scott’s production company] Scott Free, is certainly up to it. But you’re talking about designing and building sets and world-building is huge, so we’re well into it. We’re actually moving apace. You know, I have optimism, for example, that this show may well roll out in 2023. Probably will roll out in 2023, but we want to get it right.”

Hawley’s series will be the first Alien story to take place on Earth, so we can expect it to be “very grounded.” However, Landgraf promises that the show will honor everything that came before, mixing the best parts of the franchise’s first two installments.

“I think it was very conscious of the fact that there’s a cinematic universe,” added Landgraf. “And that while it has some flexibility, that the aesthetic that was established by Ridley Scott and continued by James Cameron is a part of that universe.”
