Back in 2019, Netflix and Warner Bros. struck a deal to finally adapt Neil Gaiman’s iconic comic book series, The Sandman, as a live-action TV shows. However, the novel coronavirus pandemic has halted film and TV production all over the world. But according to Gaiman, there is still some good news to share about Sandman.
While updating fans on his Tumblr page, Gaiman wrote that The Sandman series is “going really well, except it’s kind of hibernating right now until people start making TV again. The scripts for the first season are written, casting had started, directors hired, sets were being built. Everything was ready to go into production, and then we moved into a pause. As soon as the world is ready to make TV drama, Sandman will move smoothly back into being made. In the meantime, we are taking the opportunity to get the scripts as good as we can.”

The Sandman was originally published by DC Comics in 1989 before migrating to DC’s Vertigo Comics line. The story follows Morpheus AKA Dream of the Endless; whose siblings include the embodiments of Death, Destiny, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium. After spending seven decades as a captive of humans, Morpheus regains his freedom and also sets out to correct his previous mistakes. Thus far, no casting decisions have been announced for the live-action series.
Regardless of the delay for the TV show, Gaiman is lending his voice to an Audible adaptation of The Sandman later this year.
