Rosario Dawson Will Star In HBO Max’s DMZ Adaptation

It looks like Rosario Dawson is adding yet another comic adaptation to her resume. Via Deadline, Dawson is set to take the lead role for the HBO Max pilot DMZ. The series is based on the Vertigo comic book series by Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli. Ava DuVernay will direct the pilot episode and executive produce the series alongside showrunner Roberto Patino.

DMZ takes place in a near future where America has fallen into a second Civil War. As a result, Manhattan has become a demilitarized zone — hence the name of the series. Dawson will portray Alma Ortego, a medic who is trying to find her lost son. Along the way, she lends a hand to those in need, while dealing with ruthless gangs, religious fanatics and warlords.

DuVernay’s Array Filmworks is producing the show alongside Warner Bros. Television. However, it doesn’t currently have a release date, as it’s still in pre-production.

Dawson previously appeared in Netflix’s Marvel series including Daredevil and Luke Cage. She has also starred in Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City films and provided the voice of Wonder Woman in the animated film Wonder Woman: Bloodlines. Fans can also see her in the USA series Briarpatch; which is set to premiere in February.

In addition to the DMZ series, DuVernay is also co-writing and planning to direct a theatrical adaptation of Jack Kirby’s classic New Gods.
