Back in September, Warner Bros. Pictures pushed Wonder Woman 1984 back to December 25th in the hopes that theaters would be open by then. However, the resurging COVID-19 numbers suggest that any major theatrical release is unlikely this year. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has decided to release Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max on Christmas Day for no additional cost. But it will only be available for a month before leaving HBO Max and going to VOD and digital outlets.
This doesn’t mean that Wonder Woman 1984 won’t be playing in select theaters. The report indicates that Warner Bros. still has plans to distribute the film in any theaters that are open. It will also open in international theaters on December 16.

The original Wonder Woman movie was a smash hit that had a global box office take of $828.1 million. Putting it on HBO Max means that it will never come close to those numbers, even if it does well well in other countries.
However, this is a boon for HBO Max, which has lagged behind Disney+ and other streaming outlets. By scheduling a legitimate blockbuster for the end of the year, Warner Bros. should be able to increase its HBO Max subscriber count.
