Vertigo Comics’ Survivors’ Club is Headed to The CW

DC’s superheroes reign supreme on The CW, but the company’s Vertigo Comics imprint continues to find a home there as well. Deadline is reporting that The CW is developing a new show based on Vertigo’s Survivors’ Club.

Horror novelist Lauren Beukes, writer Dale Halvorsen, and artist Ryan Kelly created Survivors’ Club in 2015. In an interview with Vertigo that coincided with the release of the first issue, Beukes described the book as a “love letter to horror while also subverting the conventions of the genre.” It also provides the answer to two questions. “What if the ‘80s horror movies were real? And where are those kids today?”

The comic followed six people who had horrific experiences as children in 1987. Separately, they were the only ones to survive “the haunted house, the demonic doll, the cursed video game, the monstrous neighbor, the vengeful ghost,  and the killer imaginary friend.” Thirty years later, the survivors are drawn together in Los Angeles, as they realize that their nightmarish stories are somehow connected. And as they confronted each other’s “personal horrors,” they also had to face their own inner demons.

Jared Frieder is developing the adaptation for The CW. Frieder previously worked as a writer on the MTV scripted series Sweet/Vicious, which aired for a single season. Frieder also wrote an episode of the similarly short-lived ABC Family series, Chasing Life. He’ll be co-executive producing Survivors’ Club with Len Goldstein (Hart of Dixie).

Survivors’ Club won’t be the first time The CW has adapted a Vertigo title. That distinction belongs to iZombie, which is based on the comic by Chris Roberson and Michael Allred. That show will be airing its fifth and final season in 2019. There have been several small screen translations of other Vertigo series in the last few years. Preacher is awaiting a renewal at AMC and Lucifer was recently saved by Netflix after Fox canceled the series.
