Stefanie Scott Explains Why Jem and the Holograms Fans Need to Be Patient

Last week, the trailer for Jon M. Chu’s Jem and the Holograms was released and let’s just say that fans of the ‘80s cartoon show created by Hasbro, Marvel and the animation company Sunbow Entertainment, were not exactly ecstatic about what they saw. It seemed like many were a little mystified that it looked like a pretty straightforward rags-to-riches musical drama and nothing like the original cartoon as they were expecting.

Shortly after the trailer premiere, we spoke to Stefanie Scott, who plays Jem’s sister Kimber in the movie, about her role in the upcoming horror threequel Insidious Chapter 3 and we asked her about the fan’s reaction to the first Jem trailer.

“I think you have to see the movie to understand,” she told us. “You can’t put it all in the same movie, and I feel like it really does set it up in a cool way. I think a lot of the things that people think are missing are in there. You just have to see it to understand. You can’t put the whole movie in the trailer.” 

“I want people to see it so they can see it’s a heartwarming story,” she continued. “It’s a beautiful coming-of-age story about family, but the music is incredible and it’s really our rise to fame and then after that… I think it really needed to set up the story before we could get into everything.”

So apparently, there’s a lot more to the planned live-action movie than we see in that first trailer as the upcoming movie may just be setting things up, as is often the case with an origin story.

Universal Pictures’ Jem and the Holograms is scheduled to hit theaters on October 23.
