HBO Max Explains Why Certain DC Films Are Leaving the Service Next Month

Earlier this week, HBO Max subscribers perusing the DC section of the new streaming service may have noticed that a number of superhero movies are only available until July 1. This discovery was certainly confusing, since the platform launched just two weeks ago and it seems rather early to be getting rid of content, especially titles that the WarnerMedia-backed service owns the rights to. Fortunately, it sounds like the shakeup isn’t permanent. A representative for HBO Max recently told Observer why certain movies are leaving next month.

According to the spokesperson, the movies leaving HBO Max in July will eventually find their way back to the service. In the meantime, they’re gearing up to premiere new DC movies on the platform to fill the space left behind.

“We have a collection of DC films that will rotate on the platform,” the rep explained. “We have a new batch coming in July and then another batch coming in August. And I have just confirmed that the batch that is on right now will be returning.”

HBO Max obviously isn’t the only streaming service that offers DC titles. DC Universe also has its own selection of live-action and animated DC films that aren’t currently available to watch on HBO Max, such as Batman Ninja and the original Superman movie from 1978. As /Film notes, letting the platforms share these films might encourage subscribers to pay for both services instead of one.

It’s still unknown what the “new batch” of DC movies hitting HBO Max next month will include. However, films like Aquaman, Shazam!, Green Lantern, and Supergirl will remain in its library.
