Sonic 3 Gets Top Rotten Tomatoes & Metacritic Scores With Great Reviews

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 premiered on December 16, 2024, at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, California, and will debut in cinema halls across the US on December 20. The reviews for the movie are coming in, and they are considerably positive, resulting in strong scores on both Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes.

Critics share positive reviews for Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Professional critics are praising Sonic 3 in their reviews. ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim hails it as “the best Sonic movie yet.” Later in his review, Sim lauded Jim Carrey’s performance. “The more, the Carrey-er,” he observed on the actor playing multiple characters. “He crushes it here. This feels like an old-school comedy performance where a legendary comedian uses makeup to play multiple characters in a movie. Everything he says is gold. His physical comedy is off the charts, and he gets you to care about his journey,” he added.

Matt Donato of The A.V. Club noted that Sonic 3 “lets its animated heroes shine.” Donato pointed out that there was less “live” in the “impressively blended live-action movie” but clarified that it didn’t become “a detriment.”

The Hollywood Reporter’s Frank Scheck assured that the movie would provide an “entertaining diversion for families during the holiday season.”

Andrew Pulver of The Guardian accepted that a “cash-grab fan-service” served as the motivation behind the movie, before arguing that it was “actually a not unenjoyable experience, even if you are someone on whom the intricacies of early-00s game narrative are lost.”

Sonic 3’s Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes scores start high

At the time of writing, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has accumulated an approval rating of 85% on the review aggregating site Rotten Tomtatoes. Meanwhile, it has garnered a score of 62 out of 100 on Metacritic after 17 reviews, which indicates a “generally favorable” response. Notably, Metacritic rates a movie or a TV show via a weighted average.

Although these are promising numbers, the movie will face arguably its greatest test when it lands in theaters this Friday.
