James Gunn comments on filming Superman in Norway

“We have filmed the first scenes [in Svalbard], which show Superman fleeing to the Fortress of Solitude,” Gunn told Svalbardposten, via VG. “We wanted a place that was beautiful and felt like being in the middle of the Arctic, so we looked at several places in the world. But there were many things that sold Svalbard for us over the other places.”

He added, “First, there is the natural beauty. But there’s also the fact that you’ll find a varied landscape here that you won’t find anywhere else. Nature gives a special feeling.”

Superman, which is the first official feature film in Gunn and Peter Safran’s forthcoming DCU, stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel. The cast also includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.

Formerly known as Superman: Legacy, Superman began filming in late February 2024. The film will be part of the first slate of films and televisions in the DCU, Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Prior to Superman, an animated Creature Commandos series will be released in 2024 as part of DCU as well.

Superman is scheduled to be released in United States theaters on July 11, 2025, from Warner Bros. Pictures.
