Chris Evans Addresses Reports of Marvel Getting Original Avengers Team Back Together

Chris Evans says that nobody has yet contacted him about returning for another Avengers movie.

Earlier this month, Variety reported that Marvel Studios was considering bringing back the original Avengers team — Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, and Evans’ Captain America — for a new ensemble picture.

Marvel hasn’t announced any concrete plans to bring back the original stars at this time. It’s also possible the aforementioned characters could appear in 2026’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars.

Evans, however, recently said that, while he’s seen the rumors, he hasn’t been contacted about reprising the role of Steve Rogers at this time.

Evans said while appearing on The View, via TheWrap, “You know, I always see those reports too, and it’s news to me. I think every couple months, someone says that they’re getting Downey, and Hemsworth, and Scarlet [Johansson], and everyone’s coming back!”

Chris Evans would play Captain America again if things are ‘just right’

He added, “No one’s spoken to me about it. And look, I would never say never, but I really — I’m very protective. It’s a very precious role to me, so it would have to be just right.”

Evans has made similar comments in the past. He told TheWrap in April 2023 about potentially returning as Captain America, “It’s tough. I love that role deeply. It means so much to me. And I mean, do I think there’s more Steve Rogers stories to tell? Sure. But at the same time, I’m very, very precious with it. It’s like this little shiny thing that I have that I love so much, and I just don’t want to mess up in any way, and I was a part of something that was so special for the special period of time and in a way it really landed so well.”

Kevin Feige, meanwhile, told Entertainment Tonight in November 2023, “We did not discuss [bringing back the Avengers] at the retreat, is the truth. We’re doing a project with Scarlett. I love Robert, who is part of the family. In terms of returning, we’ll have to see.”

Johansson has also addressed the rumors, as she told The Today Show, “I feel like [Avengers: Endgame] is kind of the end, right? Like, can you come back? Could it be like a vampire version of the character? Because I’m here for that. Like a zombie version, maybe.”
