During a SnyderCon Q&A, writer Chris Terrio revealed the real-world politics that inspired Ben Affleck’s DC Extended Universe Batman.
What did Chris Terrio say about the DCEU Batman?
Terrio opened up about how the DCEU’s version of Batman took inspiration from modern politics involving “an axis of evil” and how small chances of dangers had to be taken as absolute possibilities.
“There’s a thing that Bruce says in Batman v Superman, which is, ‘If there’s even a 1% chance that he [Superman] could destroy the world, then we have to treat it as an absolute certainty.’ And that seemed to be something that was happening in the wars of our time, right?
“There was this idea that there’s an axis of evil, and if even a … miniscule chance that there’s going to be a suitcase nuke in New York City, then we have to treat it as a certainty and we have to make war. So that idea that was going through Bruce’s head was informed by everything we were looking at in the world. So we self-consciously wanted to ask that question.”
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice first released in 2016. Directed by Zack Snyder and written by Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer, the movie would go on to receive a director’s cut release, which had an R rating and a minute longer runtime than the theatrical cut by 31 minutes.
