Mahershala Ali’s Blade Reboot Starts Filming Next Month

It’s been almost three years since Kevin Feige brought Mahershala Ali onstage at San Diego Comic-Con and announced him as the star of a new Blade reboot from Marvel Studios. Now, Ali is finally getting ready to suit up as the Daywalker. According to ProductionList, cameras on Blade will start rolling next month. Blade reboot starts.

The news falls in line with earlier reports claiming that Blade would begin production this summer. Shortly after Ali’s casting went public, Feige confirmed that the film wouldn’t be released until Phase Five got underway. But since we still don’t know which movie or TV show will mark the end of Phase Four, it’s hard to speculate when Blade will arrive in theaters.

ProductionList claims that Blade will shoot in Atlanta, Georgia as well as New Orleans, Louisiana. The plot description also reads, “He is known to be a vampire hunter— half-mortal, half-immortal— who tries to rid the world of vampires as a way of avenging his mother, who was killed by a vampire as she gave birth to him.” This indicates that the film will stick close to Blade’s origin in the comics, a storyline that was previously explored in the original Blade movie starring Wesley Snipes. Filming is expected to begin on July 4.

So far, Blade’s supporting cast only officially includes two other actors: Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods) and Aaron Pierre (The Underground Railroad). The identities of their characters have yet to be revealed. However, Pierre’s role was said to be “highly coveted” by many young actors and required a lengthy search by Feige and director Bassam Tariq. Lindo, on the other hand, was always the studio’s top choice to embody the role he is playing. Tariq is directing the film from a screenplay by Stacy Osei-Kuffour, a veteran of HBO’s Watchmen series.

Marvel hasn’t announced a release date for Blade.
