Warning: There are massive spoilers ahead!
Venom: Let There Be Carnage was largely self-contained to its Sony-verse of Spider-Man adjacent characters, at least until the mid-credits scene. Somehow, Venom and Eddie found themselves transported to the MCU in the closing moments of Spider-Man: Far From Home, just as J. Jonah Jameson outed Peter Parker as Spider-Man on TV.
Sony hasn’t been shy about the possibility of crossing over Tom Hardy’s Venom with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. But this was the first on-screen step in that direction. While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, director Andy Serkis indicated that this wasn’t always the plan for the Venom sequel.
According to Serkis, the mid-credits scene was “100 percent in flux. It couldn’t have been more in flux-y if you tried. [Laughs].” He also indicated that “it was something that they talked about from before I even came on to the movie.”

Additionally, Serkis suggested that Spider-Man could have potentially had a bigger role in this film.
“There were moments where [Spider-Man] was going to be in the story, potentially, and then he wasn’t,” said Serkis. “But no, we decided that we wanted to really examine the Venom-verse first.”
The immediate challenge of the inevitable crossover is that neither Spider-Man nor Venom have a reason to target each other. However, Venom did seem to have some previous awareness of Peter/Spider-Man. That may have come from the symbiote’s ability to access info from alternate realities.
Spider-Man: No Way Home will hit theaters on December 17. If there’s an immediate follow up to Let There Be Carnage‘s mid-credits scene, that’s likely where it will be. Since No Way Home also deals with the multiverse, Venom’s appearance wouldn’t be out of the question. But if it happens there, it’s will probably take place in No Way Home‘s mid-credits or post-credits scenes.
