Death is a constant companion in the life of soldiers and superheroes. It is a fact that Steve Rogers knows all too well as Captain America, regardless of what universe he is in. However, following the death of Tony Stark in the Ultimate Universe, it will fall to him to carry on and lead The Ultimates.
Written by Deniz Camp with art by Juan Frigeri, The Ultimates #7 finds Steve Rogers discussing recent events with Jim Hammond, the Human Torch. The previous issue saw the team face off against the Hulk, with lethal results for their teen leader, Tony Stark. This has left the team uncertain, with the elder statesmen superheroes wondering how to best prepare their colleagues for the war to come. They ponder this while indulging Captain America’s sense of nostalgia as they seek out a bar from his old neighborhood that is still around in 2024.

Ultimates #7 preview steps back from world conflicts
The first six issues of The Ultimates expanded the team’s roster considerably. However, there has been comparatively little time spent on character development. Ironically, spotlight issues introduced the new Doctor Doom, She-Hulk, and Hawkeye. Yet other characters, like Jim Hammond and America Chavez, have had markedly little chance to speak.
It appears that The Ultimates #7 will be taking steps to address this. The preview’s slice-of-life scene develops both Captain America and Human Torch and how they are different. Both are old soldiers, but Jim appears better acclimated to the modern world. Steve Rogers, contrastingly, remains a man out of time, despite the differences between the main Marvel timeline and the Ultimate Universe.
The Ultimates #7 arrives in comic shops everywhere on December 4, 2024.
