Batman Takes Up His Sword in DC’s Dark Knights of Steel

Did you ever watch Game of Thrones and think, “Yeah, dragons are cool and all…but what this really needs is more Batman!”? If the answer’s yes, DC has a big surprise coming your way in the near future. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, writer Tom Taylor detailed his plans for Dark Knights of Steel. The new 12-issue limited series pairs Taylor with artist Yasmine Putri and re-imagines Batman (along with several other DC heroes) in the context of a medieval setting.

DC’s Elseworlds line has turned its characters into pirates, samurai, and Victorian-era vigilantes in the past. But this time, we’ll see them don new sets of armor (or in some cases, tunics) for a quest inspired by Taylor’s favorite fantasy epics. And along the way, we’ll meet new versions of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, and even Black Lightning.

“I’ve spent the last two years creating a new epic fantasy universe for DC Comics, and Dark Knights of Steel is an absolute dream come true,” said Taylor. “Despite being the writer of the DC horror series, DCeased, I’m actually a huge fantasy fan. Combining two of my favorite things, DC superheroes and high fantasy, is my absolute happy place. “

“I grew up reading Lord of the Rings alongside Superman,” continued Taylor. “Terry Pratchett alongside Garth Ennis. Robin Hobb and Mark Waid. Dragonlance and Justice League. Now I get to bring all this together with the incredible Yasmine Putri, in the biggest story I could imagine. A tale of war and love, of despair and hope, of betrayal and improbable alliances forged in battle.”

DC still hasn’t announced a release date for Dark Knights of Steel. However, you can view some early artwork from the series in the gallery below.
