Captain America 4: Harrison Ford Says Red Hulk MCU Role Wasn’t ‘Terribly Difficult’

Harrison Ford says that playing Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross/Red Hulk in Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World wasn’t a “terribly difficult acting proposition.”

Captain America: Brave New World opens in United States theaters in February 2025. The fourth film in Marvel Studios’ Captain America franchise, the film sees Anthony Mackie reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America, while Ford plays Ross, a character previously played by Willian Hurt, who passed away in 2022.

What did Harrison Ford say about playing Red Hulk in Captain America 4?

Speaking with Empire Magazine, Ford said that playing Red Hulk in Captain America 4 didn’t require any kind of special dedication and, rather, was “another day at the office.”

He continued, “I tried to understand the ambition of the filmmakers, and to be useful to them. I just didn’t sit home at night and say, ‘Oh, what do I want to do when I turn into the Hulk?’ It didn’t seem to me to be a terribly difficult acting proposition.”

Ford did say that he was “a little concerned” about taking over the role for Hurt. He commented further, “I was ambitious to find the right way of assuming this character after the audience had seen other people doing it. I’m only slightly familiar with the Marvel Universe — I live in another universe — but I have watched a number of Marvel films with wonderful actors, apparently having a good time. And I thought, ‘Well, why not me?’”

Director Julius Onah, meanwhile, praised Ford’s performance in the movie and called his depiction of Red Hulk “mind-blowing.”

“All of us on set were like, ‘Holy f—king sh-t, he nailed it,’” Onah said. “It’s really great to get back to a Hulk that is just fucking breaking shit, and a rage monster.”

Captain America: Brave New World will be released on February 14, 2025, as part of Phase Five of the MCU.
