It’s been seven years since CD Projekt Red released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, a video game that was widely credited with popularizing Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher novels. And while the 2016 DLC expansion, “Blood and Wine,” was supposedly the last adventure for Geralt of Rivia, it doesn’t mean that The Witcher‘s saga is done.
On its official site, CD Projekt Red announced that “the next installment in The Witcher series of video games is currently in development, kicking off a new saga for the franchise.”
Additionally, CD Projekt Red revealed that the company is moving away from its proprietary REDengine. Instead, the latest Witcher game will utilize Unreal Engine 5 as part of a multi-year deal with Epic Games.

According to CD Projekt Red, the new deal with Epic “covers not only licensing, but technical development of Unreal Engine 5, as well as potential future versions of Unreal Engine, where relevant. We’ll closely collaborate with Epic Games’ developers with the primary goal being to help tailor the engine for open-world experiences.”
However, further details about the new game were not disclosed. CD Projekt Red neglected to say if the new game is a reboot or a revival. Will Geralt come out of retirement again? Or will the new chapter put Ceri in the spotlight? There’s also the possibility that the next game could explore a time period before or after Geralt.
It should also be noted that CD Projekt Red’s last project, Cyberpunk 2077, was plagued by problems after launch. Hopefully the switch to Unreal Engine 5 will fix some of those issues going forward.
