Lanterns’ Aaron Pierre hasn’t yet seen the 2011 Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds.
Pierre, who recently starred in Netflix’s Rebel Ridge, has been tapped to play John Stewart in the upcoming DCU Lanterns series, which will also star Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan. The series comes from co-writers Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Pierre said that he hasn’t watched the Reynolds-led Green Lantern movie; however, it is “most definitely” something he plans to check out something in the near future.
What else did Aaron Pierre say about Lanterns and John Stewart?
Noting that the animated Justice League Unlimited series that ran from 2004 to 2006 may have been his first introduction to the John Stewart character, Pierre said that being cast in the DCU is “exciting” and that he and the rest of the Lanterns team “can’t wait to get to work.”
He further commented on the process of being cast as John Stewart, saying it was a “beautiful experience.” Given that he’s “an introvert” and “somewhat of a recluse,” Pierre said he wasn’t “too aware” of all the publicity surrounding his casting.
“I was just locked into giving the very best version that I could of this beautiful character in the rigorous audition process,” he continued. “I’m a firm believer that what’s meant for you won’t miss you. So, I gave my best and then set it free. Now I’ve been gifted the opportunity to bring this beautiful character to life and, hopefully, I serve John Stewart. Hopefully, I serve the Green Lantern Corps. We’re just really excited for the people to see what we put together here.”
The logline for Lanterns reads, “The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”
Lanterns does not have an official premiere date at this time.
