With the final episode of Superman & Lois aired, so ends the age of the Arrowverse. The shared setting started on The CW, yet grew to encompass every film and series based on DC Comics. However, while Superman & Lois resolved most of its on-going storylines, other series were not so fortunate. Here’s a rundown on some of the biggest unresolved storylines from the shows making up the Arrowverse.
Everything from Green Arrow and the Canaries’ pilot
The penultimate episode of Arrow acted as a backdoor pilot for a new superhero show. Green Arrow and the Canaries would have centered around the character of Mia Queen and been set in the future of 2040. The pilot found Mia reunited with her father’s friend Dinah Drake and the reformed Black Siren.
The episode set up a number of ongoing mysteries. Chief among these was Dinah Drake’s presence in 2040 and how all record of her life in 2019 was erased from history. The episode also ended with Mia’s brother William being abducted by unknown parties.
Green Arrow & the Canaries was not picked up as a series. Mia’s story continued into the final season of The Flash, where she traveled back in time, still hunting William’s kidnappers. However, this story was never resolved. Nor did any Arrowverse series ever explain what happened to Dinah Drake and why.
Maxwell Lord and the Omegahedron in Supergirl
Maxwell Lord was introduced as a villain in the first season of Supergirl. A self-made billionaire and inventor, Lord was cynical about both the American government and Supergirl’s good intentions. Despite this, when Earth-38 faced an invasion of Kryptonian criminals, Lord teamed with Supergirl to save the world. However, one scene in the Supergirl season 1 finale showed General Sam Lane (who was also no fan of Supergirl) meeting with Maxwell Lord to deliver an Omegahedron; an advanced Kryptonian power source, liberated from the invaders.
Maxwell Lord disappeared from the show after Supergirl season 1. This coincided with the show moving from CBS to The CW and the show’s production relocating from Los Angeles to Vancouver. Either Peter Facinelli did not want to relocate to Vancouver or the producers felt Lena Luthor would better fill the sinister scientist frienemy role. In either case, Maxwell Lord was never mentioned again, nor was the Omegahedron ever utilized in any Arrowverse storyline.
John Constantine’s Favor to Lucifer
With reality collapsing, John Constantine was unable to work his usual tricks to open a portal to Limbo during Crisis on Infinite Earths. Luckily, the Devil himself owed the Laughing Magician a favor. Though Lucifer was less than thrilled about having the debt called in, he would not let it be said that the Devil did not give anyone their due. Especially John Constantine.
However, it was never revealed just what Constantine did to earn this favor beyond it involving the demon Mazikeen. Fans hoped for answers in a follow-up teaming the two Vertigo Comics mainstays. Alas, Constantine never appeared on Lucifer afterward, and Lucifer never appeared on Legends of Tomorrow.
The Fate of Bruce Wayne on Batwoman
The original setup for Batwoman had Kate Kane replacing her cousin as the protector of Gotham City five years after Bruce Wayne vanished under mysterious circumstances. After Kate was abducted and brainwashed by Black Mask, a new Batwoman, Ryan Wilder, rose to replace her. Once her mind was restored, Kate left Gotham in Ryan’s care and went off in search of the missing Batman. However, the sudden cancellation of Batwoman prevented fans from learning why Bruce Wayne vanished and where in the Arrowverse he had been for the last seven years.
Legends of Tomorrow’s Season 7 cliffhanger
With a rotating team of misfits, Legends of Tomorrow may have been the strangest show in the Arrowverse. The time-traveling Legends shifted focus every season, facing threats ranging from future tyrants and demons to magical monsters and the Legion of Doom. The seventh season ended on a cliffhanger, with the team being arrested by the Time Police. It also ended with the revelation that rogue time cop Mike (Donald Faison) was actually the hero Booster Gold.
Legends of Tomorrow was fully expected to receive an eighth season. Unfortunately, the new management at The CW was unwilling to keep financing the fairly expensive series. A loyal fan base continues to push for a Max movie to resolve the Legends final fate alongside Booster Gold. Unfortunately, the best they may get is a confirmation from the Earth-Prime tie-in comic that the Legends did eventually escape custody and get home.
Jay Garrick: Traveler of the Multiverse
Following Crisis on Infinite Earths, travel between different realities was presumed to be impossible, or at least far more difficult. The days of breachers and speedsters jumping between Earths were meant to be over. Despite this, there were hints that the Jay Garrick Flash had found a way to overcome this obstacle and travel the new Arrowverse.
Most of these hints came in Stargirl, which was set on the new Earth-2. This Earth featured a Jay Garrick who appeared to be identical to his counterpart from the Pre-Crisis Earth-3. This Jay Garrick also survived to start a new life on Earth-Prime, though his place in the timeline there was never explained.
According to actor John Wesley Shipp, Stargirl season 4 would have confirmed that the same Jay Garrick was running between worlds and shows. Unfortunately, the CW opted to end Stargirl with season 3. However, the finale did tease Jay Garrick running between realities, as he showed up to lead the JSA to another adventure.
Superman and Lois Season 4 is now streaming in full on The CW.
