BBC Announces New Doctor Who Spin-off: Tales of the TARDIS

The BBC planned to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who with the creation of an online archive of over 800 episodes. The network has now confirmed a new series, Tales of the TARDIS, that will launch alongside the new website.

The new spin-off was announced by the BBC, along with the website’s new official name, The Whoniverse. Beginning on November 1, the Whoniverse will be the official name, and dedicated home, for all the Doctor Who series and spin-offs on BBC iplayer. This includes Tales of the TARDIS, which is described as “the first original Whoniverse series.” This suggests more new series may be in the works.

What is Tales of the TARDIS About?

Presented in six parts, Tales of the TARDIS will reunite several beloved duos from the classic Doctor Who series. Boarding a special TARDIS, the pairs will embark on a journey across time and space. Beyond being a look back at the show’s long history, the new series will allow the actors to recreate their original characters.

Tales from the TARDIS boasts an impressive ensemble. Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy return as the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Doctors. They are joined by Janet Fielding as Tegan, Nicola Bryant as Peri, and Sophie Aldred as Ace.

Tales from the TARDIS will also reunite the First Doctor companions Vicki (Maureen O’Brien) and Steven (Peter Purves). Frazer Hines and Wendy Padbury will return as the Second Doctor’s companions, Jamie and Zoe. Katy Manning, who played the Third Doctor’s companion Jo, will join Daniel Anthony as The Sarah Jane Adventures’ Clyde.

“The word Whoniverse was invented by fans, so it’s time to give it official status,” said Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies. Recently returned to the show, Davies is also writing Tales of the TARDIS, with Phil Ford and Peter McTighe. “To see old Doctors and companions reunited, still fighting the good fight, is a perfect way to celebrate the Doctor’s 60th birthday!”

Tales of the Tardis launches on November 1, 2023, along with The Whoniverse on BBC iplayer.
