Comb through enough Doctor Who episodes and you will spot a vast assortment of famous Brits in guest-starring roles. Everyone from Andrew Garfield to Carey Mulligan to Bill Nighy has shared the screen with different incarnations of the Time Lord over the years. But in 2023, the series will make room for one of the top stars of American TV. Via Deadline, Neil Patrick Harris has booked a role in the upcoming season of Doctor Who, which will coincide with the show’s 60th anniversary.
Harris didn’t reveal the nature of his mystery role or say how many episodes he appears in. However, he did offer a glimpse at his wardrobe for the series on Instagram earlier today. Sporting an apron, powdered wig, and pince-nez spectacles, Harris has the fashion sense of an old-timey toy maker. But his fierce-looking scowl suggests that this character is anything but friendly. In fact, showrunner Russell T. Davies claims that Harris is playing “ the greatest enemy the Doctor has ever faced”.

“It’s my huge honor to open our studio doors for the mighty Neil Patrick Harris,” added Davies in a new statement. “But who, why, what is he playing? You’ll just have to wait. But I promise you, the stuff we’re shooting now is off the scale. Doctor beware.”
Of course, Harris isn’t the only new face joining the cast of Doctor Who. The upcoming season will also introduce Ncuti Gatwa as the Fourteenth Doctor and Yasmine Finney as another new character named Rose. Additionally, David Tennant and Catherine Tate will reprise their fan-favorite roles as the Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble, respectively.
Doctor Who is currently shooting in Wales and will air its new season on BBC America sometime next year.
