Nearly 30 years after her last onscreen appearance as Wednesday Addams, Christina Ricci is returning to the character’s orbit for her upcoming Netflix spinoff. Deadline reports that Ricci has booked a role on the streaming service’s Wednesday series, which has Jenna Ortega stepping into the role that made Ricci a household name back in the early ‘90s.
The nature of Ricci’s role is still a mystery. But although Wednesday features a supernatural twist like its iconic source material, don’t expect Ortega’s character to visit the future and meet an older version of herself. Instead, Ricci is playing a “newly conceived character” created to replace the one played by Thora Birch, who was forced to exit the series back in December. Ricci will also be a series regular, meaning she will appear in most of the episodes.

Ricci wasn’t the first actress to play Wednesday Addams in live-action. But her performance in 1991’s The Addams Family made her so synonymous with the role that many fans have been clamoring for her to appear in Wednesday ever since it was first announced. Ricci later reprised her role in the film’s 1993 sequel, Addams Family Values. She currently stars on Showtime’s Yellowjackets and also had a small role in The Matrix Resurrections last year.
Netflix hasn’t announced a premiere date for Wednesday. However, the show is expected to wrap production in Romania by the end of the month.
