It’s been almost three years since viewers paid a visit to Westeros, but a return to its shores is just over the horizon. Author George R.R. Martin recently published a new blog post with an update on HBO’s House of the Dragon prequel series. And it should come as a relief to longtime fans that season 1 has finally completed production.
“Exciting news out of London,” wrote Martin. “I am informed that shooting has wrapped for the first season of House of the Dragon. Yes, all ten episodes. I have seen rough cuts of a few of them, and I’m loving them. Of course, a lot more work needs to be done. Special effects, color timing, score, all the post production work. But the writing, the directing, the acting all look terrific. I hope you will like them as much as I do. My hat is off to [showrunners] Ryan [Condal] and Miguel [Sapochnik] and their team, and to our amazing cast.”
House of the Dragon draws influence from Martin’s Fire & Blood companion novel, which originally hit stores in 2018. The show takes place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones and explores the history of the Targaryen lineage, with a host of other supporting players getting swept up in their family drama. HBO previously released a teaser for the series last fall, revealing early looks at new characters like King Viserys I (Paddy Considine), Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), and Viserys’ daughter, the princess Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy).

Unfortunately, it seems like not even Martin knows for sure when House of the Dragon will actually premiere on HBO. The show has to go through a lengthy post-production process before it eventually debuts. Those dragons aren’t going to design themselves, after all. But this didn’t stop Martin from dropping a few hints.
“I wish I could tell you,” teased Martin. “Lots of work remains to be done, as I said, and COVID makes planning difficult. This spring? Unlikely. Maybe summer? Could be. Fall? Who knows You’ll know when we do.”
