John Williams is Composing the Theme For Obi-Wan Kenobi

You may have thought that John Williams had his final note on the Star Wars saga after The Rise of Skywalker premiered in 2019. And so did he. Regardless, the iconic composer is returning to the franchise for a new adventure starring one of its best-known characters. Variety is reporting that Williams will compose the theme music for Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

According to the announcement, Williams began recording for the series under “tight security” last week with a Los Angeles orchestra. However, it’s still not clear if he’s writing new music altogether or if he’s simply expanding on themes he wrote for the original and prequel trilogies. Lucasfilm has yet to announce who will be composing the remainder of the show’s music.

Williams has been an indispensable part of the Star Wars family since the original film hit theaters in 1977. In fact, that film netted him his third Oscar win for Best Original Score. But this isn’t the first time he’s lent his talents to an offshoot Star Wars entry. He previously composed music for Solo: A Star War Wars Story in 2018. The following year, he wrote music for Disneyland’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge attraction, which also won him his latest Grammy Award in 2020.

Naturally, this is a big get for the Obi-Wan series, especially since Williams rarely composes for television. He also recently celebrated his 90th birthday. But despite his age, he still has a few noteworthy projects on the horizon. That includes next year’s Indiana Jones 5 and Spielberg’s The Fabermans, which hits arrives this November.

Obi-Wan Kenobi will premiere on Disney+ on May 25.
