Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and Section 31 Are Still In Development At Paramount+

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and Section 31 Are Still In Development

Does it seem like there’s a lot of Star Trek shows on Paramount+? That’s because there are. And there are potentially at least two more on the way. Deadline is reporting that the long-in-the-works Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and Section 31 spinoffs are both alive in development. Additionally, Absentia co-creator Gaia is working on the latest pitch for Starfleet Academy.

There have been several glimpses at Starfleet Academy in the Star Trek TV series and even in the 2009 reboot film. However, it’s unclear which Trek era would be used in the show. The academy is where men, women, and aliens of all kinds have come together to embrace the ideals of the Federation. Traditionally, the school has been located in San Francisco, California.

According to Deadline, Starfleet Academy is likely to get the greenlight before Micelle Yeoh’s Section 31 series. Yeoh’s character, Empress Philippa Georgiou, was written out of Star Trek: Discovery season 3 to set up that show. Regardless, there’s been little word on that series for well over a year.

While this may appear to be an oversaturation of Star Trek, executive producer Alex Kurtzman indicated that some of the current shows may end before the new series arrive.

“We have to think several years out,” said Kurtzman. “We’re thinking about knowing we’ll want new shows on the air two or three years from now so we have to start planning those now. There’s a bunch of things in development now that are starting to take shape and we’re super excited about it.”
