Only two episodes are left in Jodie Whittaker’s final season of Doctor Who, but she’s not hanging up her sonic screwdriver just yet. BBC America previously revealed that Whittaker will appear as the Doctor in three additional specials airing throughout 2022. Now, BBC has released the synopsis for the first of these specials, which premieres on New Year’s Day. Doctor Who’s New Year’s Day.
The upcoming New Year’s special features a trio of guest stars, including Aisling Bea, Adjani Salmon, and Pauline McLynn. It’s still not clear who McLynn is playing. Regardless, the Doctor will give them a night they will never forget. Check out the synopsis below:
“Sarah (Aisling Bea) owns and runs ELF storage, and Nick (Adjani Salmon) is a customer who visits his unit every year on New Year’s Eve. This year, however, their night turns out to be a little different than planned…”

BBC is also planning a second Doctor Who special for sometime in the spring of 2022. Whittaker’s last special will drop next fall and mark her final appearance as the Thirteenth Doctor. Showrunner Chris Chibnall is departing the series as well. The network hasn’t offered any hints as to who they might be looking at to replace Whittaker as the fourteenth incarnation of the Doctor. Regardless, Whittaker has already filmed her regeneration scene.
The next episode of Doctor Who airs this Sunday, November 28 on BBC America.
