Marvel’s What If…? is only two episodes into its first season, but the series already has a loyal following. And according to executive producer Brad Winderbaum, season 2 may not be far behind.
Winderbaum shared an update on season 2’s timetable during a recent discussion with Collider. Animation has a very different ballgame from live action. But if everything works out, new episodes of What If…? could premiere in 2022.
“As you know with animation, it takes a long time to produce,” said Winderbaum. “We were fortunate enough to get the green light on a second season early enough to have a chance to release it next year.”
However, Winderbaum doesn’t want to commit to this release model right away, especially as the world continues to deal with the COVID-19. Winderbaum previously shared that What If…?’s first season was supposed to have 10 episodes. But because of the pandemic, the last episode got pushed to season 2. Regardless, it sounds like Winderbaum and his team are working hard to ensure that the next season arrives on time.

“We’ll see what happens,” he added. “Obviously, I don’t want to predict the future with this new world we live in, but our intention is to make it an annual release.”
By the time season 2 rolls around, fans will also have seen a handful of Phase Four movies, which opens the door for new MCU additions like Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi and the cast of Eternals to voice animated versions of their characters. And while speaking with Screen Rant, Kevin Feige confirmed that this is already in the works.
“That’s the fun thing about having the What If…? series now; we can explore questions just like that,” said Feige. “And I will say, just as season 1 is tapping into films and storylines from the MCU that you’ve seen up to this point, season 2 will definitely incorporate movies from Phase 4.”
The next episode of What If…? airs this Wednesday, August 25 on Disney+.
