Netflix could be adding yet another comic book adaptation to its ranks. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the streamer has enlisted Doctor Sleep director Mike Flanagan and producer Trevor Macy to write a pilot based on BOOM! Studios’ Something is Killing the Children.
Since it launched in 2019, Something is Killing the Children has earned consistently rave reviews. The first issue alone sold 175,000 copies, with overall sales for the series falling somewhere north of 1.2 million. In 2020, the comic also received the Eisner Award for Best New Series. Created by writer James Tynion IV and artist Werther Dell’Edera, the story takes place in a town called Archer’s Peak, where child abductions are fairly common. Although some of the kids do find their way home, they come bearing stories that no grown-up wants to believe. However, the victims soon find an ally in Erica Slaughter, a monster hunter who claims to see whatever it is that they can see.

Netflix already has a long-running relationship with Flanagan and Macy that stretches back to the release of 2016’s Hush; which Flanagan co-wrote and directed and Macy produced. Since then, they’ve released several other well-received projects on the platform, including The Haunting of Hill House and its follow-up, The Haunting of Bly Manor, as well as another Stephen King adaptation, Gerald’s Game. Flanagan and Macy are also collaborating on two other new series for Netflix: Midnight Mass and The Midnight Club.
Right now, there’s still no guarantee that Something is Killing the Children will go to series. But if everything works out, Macy will act as showrunner. BOOM! president of development Stephen Christy is executive producing alongside CEO Ross Richie, and head of TV Mark Ambrose. Additionally, Tynion and Dell’Edera are onboard as co-executive producers.
