Two New Actresses Join HBO’s House of the Dragon

House of the Dragon already takes place several centuries before Game of Thrones. But according to this latest casting news, the upcoming spinoff is winding the clock back a few extra years for flashbacks involving two key characters. Variety is reporting that Milly Alcock and Emily Carey will have recurring roles on the new series.

Alcock is starring as a younger version of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, while Carey is playing a younger version of Alicent Hightower. The adult versions of those characters will be played by Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke, respectively. Born with pure Valyrian blood, Rhaenyra is the daughter of King Viserys I (Paddy Considine). She’s a dragonrider who dreams of becoming the first woman to rule Westeros. However, she isn’t the only one who has her eye on the Iron Throne. Her stepmother and Viserys’ second wife, Alicent, harbors her own desires for power. Alicent also happens to be the daughter of Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), the Hand of the King.

DC fans might recognize Carey from playing a younger version of Diana in the original Wonder Woman in 2017. She also had a long-running role on the BBC medical drama, Casualty. Meanwhile, Alcock has appeared in episodes of several Australian TV shows, including Reckoning and The Gloaming.

House of the Dragon draws influence from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, which is set 300 years prior to Game of Thrones and memorably depicted a fierce rivalry between Rhaenyra and Alicent. The series began filming in the U.K. earlier this year with Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal acting as co-showrunners. HBO will premiere its 10-episode first season on HBO sometime in 2022.
