This week, Netflix unleashed a brand new trailer for Masters of the Universe: Revelation ahead of its highly-anticipated premiere later this month, treating fans to new story details and fresh looks at its heroic supporting cast. Now, the streamer has enlisted showrunner Kevin Smith to add his own running commentary. In a new video, Smith breaks down several of the trailer’s key moments. Plus, he even drops a few extra hints about what to expect from the first round of episodes. Check out what he had to say below.

Smith confirmed that the first voice we hear in the trailer is that of Evil-Lyn, voiced by Lena Headey. He also couldn’t help but geek out over some of the show’s other A-list stars, including Stephen Root (Cringer) and Henry Rollins (Tri-Klops). Smith teased that the show uses the erstwhile Black Flag singer “to the best possible degree” on the show. Additionally, he praised Justin Long’s turn as Roboto, who will apparently “pull your heartstrings” throughout the first season.

Smith promises that Revelation will “honor every part” of the classic Masters of the Universe mythos. And it sounds like he and his fellow creators didn’t skimp on the design process. According to Smith, the one shot of Snake Mountain that appears in the trailer cost more than the budget for his debut film, Clerks. But more importantly, the series breaks new ground by having its heroes and villains band together to prevent Eternia’s destruction.
“Things are so dire in Eternia that we’re doing team-ups you never imagined, because the threat to Eternia is that big,” said Smith. Naturally, Smith also had to give props to Mark Hamill’s performance as Skeletor, whose big showdown with He-Man has been “40 years in the making.”
Whatever’s in store, it definitely sounds like the series will take full advantage of Netflix’s looser content regulations. The ’80s Filmation cartoon couldn’t even have the characters punch each other or engage in direct swordfights. “Our series is designed to play like the very next episode of the classic cartoon,” added Smith. “But in our version, people can stab each other.”
It sounds like somebody, or perhaps multiple somebodies, will not survive.
Masters of the Universe: Revelation Part 1 hits Netflix on July 23.
