The Flash Season 8 Will Open With a “Crossover-Type” Event

There hasn’t been a major Arrowverse crossover since Crisis of Infinite Earths wrapped up over a year ago. But it sounds like The CW is ready to start bringing its many costumed characters together again, starting with the next season of The Flash. According to Deadline, the first five episodes of  The Flash’s eighth season will be treated like an event, with several other heroes sharing the screen with Grant Gustin’s Scarlet Speedster.

The CW CEO Mark Pedowitz shared this news on a press call about the network’s fall lineup earlier today. During his address, he confirmed that the initial five episodes of The Flash season 8 “will feature different heroes from the CWverse.”

“The idea for The Flash is, [showrunner] Eric Wallace and [executive producer] Greg [Berlanti] have come together and are talking about other superheroes from the CW-verse who will come together in each individual episode,” said Pedowitz. “It will not quite be a crossover but will have a crossover-type feel and the introduction of all these characters.”

Following Crisis on Infinite Earths, The CW was plotting a smaller crossover split between episodes of Batwoman and Superman and Lois. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 outbreak derailed plans for this event, which was originally going to air this year. Pedowitz explained that the decision to “event-ize” the first part of The Flash’s new season stems from the fact that production on the new episodes is starting later than usual due to the pandemic. Season 7 will wrap filming in late June or early July. After that, the cast and crew will take a few months off before resuming work in September.

The next episode of The Flash airs tonight at 8pm on The CW. Season 8 will premiere sometime in November.
