Earlier this year, director Tim Burton and former Smallville showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar sold a new take on The Addams Family to Netflix. The new series, Wednesday, will put the spotlight on the Addams’ oldest child as a young adult. Now, Netflix has announced that Jenna Ortega has been cast as Wednesday Addams on the show.

One of Ortega’s earliest roles was in Iron Man 3 as the Vice President’s daughter. She also had a recurring role as young Jane Villanueva in The CW’s Jane the Virgin. More recently, Ortega was also cast in leading roles in You season 2 and the animated series, Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous. Additionally, she will appear in Scream next year.

In the new series, Wednesday will be a student at Nevermore Academy as she deals with her “emerging psychic ability.” Wednesday will also be swept up into a supernatural murder mystery that previously entangled her parents 25 years earlier.
MGM Television and Netflix are co-producing the Wednesday series. The initial season will run eight episodes.
