Masters of the Universe: Revelation Part 1 Will Premiere In July

The long-awaited sequel series to Masters of the Universe is one step closer to fruition. Via EW, Netflix has announced that Masters of the Universe: Revelation will be split into two parts. The first batch of episodes will premiere on July 23.

Showrunner Kevin Smith also explained how the new series lines up with the original show before sending He-Man and his friends into unexpected directions.

“[The first episode starts] in lockstep with the old show,” said Smith. “[Then] things take a shift which allows all the characters to go through these periods of growth.”

Additionally, Smith indicated that Prince Adam’s secret identity as He-Man will be a key component of the story.

“Only certain people know the secret that Prince Adam is really He-Man,” related Smith. “We build our entire story on who was left out of the secret and the damaging trickle-down effects of that. [It’s a story about] a hero who has to live under deception in order to protect those he loves, but it’s [also] about how that deception rots at the core.”

Additionally, Smith indicated that the new series will be able to explore more dramatic territory than the original show.

“We get to see them engage not just in clashing swords, but in far deeper conversations than we’ve ever seen them before,” said Smith. “It’s not just simply like these two dudes [He-Man and Skeletor] have been trying to beat each other up for decades. We get to tell stories of abuse…stories of isolation, grief. We use these characters as long as they’ve been around — and most people consider them toys or action figures — to tell insanely human stories set in a very inhuman world.”
