Star Trek: Prodigy Reveals the First Look at Captain Janeway’s Return

Kathryn Janeway is returning to Starfleet. It’s been over 25 years since Kate Mulgrew began headlining Star Trek: Voyager as the first female captain in the history of the Star Trek franchise. And later this year, she’ll reprise her role in animated form to offer guidance to a new generation of cosmic explorers. During today’s First Contact Day panels, Paramount released new images of Janeway as she will appear on Star Trek: Prodigy.

Mulgrew herself (via io9) announced her involvement with the upcoming CG-animated series, which will eventually premiere on Paramount+. But instead of serving as the Prodigy’s captain, Janeway will appear as the ship’s Emergency Training Hologram. According to new details, Prodigy begins in the year 2383, five years after the Voyager completed its final pass through the Delta Quadrant. The new series’ alien protagonists will also explore that same region of deep space. Paramount also shared an early look at these characters as well.

Voyager concluded its seven-year run in 2001. However, Mulgrew appeared as Janeway in Star Trek: Nemesis, where she had been promoted to Admiral. Mulgrew also lent her voice to the video game Star Trek: Legacy in 2006.

All 10 episodes of Prodigy’s first season will eventually air on Nickelodeon after they’ve completed their run on Paramount+. The streaming service hasn’t announced a premiere date for the series.
