Director Jonathan Entwistle Joins Disney+’s Willow Sequel Series

Earlier this month, Jon M. Chu was forced to step down as the director of the pilot episode for Disney+’s upcoming Willow series. But fortunately, Lucasfilm has found another capable filmmaker to continue the title character’s story. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Jonathan Entwistle will step into the director’s chair for the series’ pilot.

Entwistle previously developed The End of the F***ing World for Netflix in 2017, and also directed several episodes of that show’s first season. Last year, he continued his relationship with the streamer with I Am Not Okay With This, which ended up getting canceled due to COVID-19-related reasons. Despite this setback, Entwistle recently landed a high-profile gig as the overseer behind eOne’s rebooted Power Rangers franchise.

Willow serves as a follow-up to Ron Howard’s original 1988 fantasy film, which starred Warwick Davis as Willow Ufgood. Davis is reprising his role on the upcoming series. Plus, he’ll also act alongside a trio of young actresses: Ellie Bamber, Cailee Spaeny, and Erin Kellyman. The series’ plot reportedly centers on these new characters as they search for a missing prince. This week, word broke that Spider-Man: Far From Home’s Tony Revolori was in talks for a role on the show as well.

Jonathan Kasdan and Wendy Mericle are spearheading Willow as co-showrunners. They’re also executive producing the series Howard, Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Roopesh Parekh, and Bob Dolman.

Disney+ still hasn’t set a release date for Willow.
